The Sleep Disorder You May Not Know You Have
Do you find yourself constantly exhausted even though you had a full night’s sleep? Maybe you have heard repeatedly from loved ones that you snore loudly at night. If either applies to you, you may be experiencing the side effects of a common sleep condition. We need proper sleep each night to ensure that our bodies and minds are recharged and ready to start the next day. Adults who are not getting proper sleep can experience a wide range of serious health issues that can negatively affect their daily lives. Read on to learn about this sleep condition and why it should be treated as soon as possible.
What is Sleep Apnea?
If you feel that your sleep is being affected or your loved ones are commenting on your snoring, you may be suffering from a common sleep condition known as sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition that causes the soft tissues in the back of the throat to relax during sleep, obstructing the airway and limiting proper oxygen flow. Patients who experience sleep apnea stop breathing multiple times per night. It can be dangerous and even life-threatening if left untreated. Over time, the lack of proper sleep and the interruptions in breathing can lead to health issues such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes and even death. Patients are also at higher risk of being in an accident from exhaustion and lack of sleep.
How Do I Know If I Have Sleep Apnea?
The best way to determine if you have sleep apnea is through an evaluation or sleep study. If you are suffering from any of the following symptoms, you may have undiagnosed sleep apnea:
- Loud, persistent snoring
- Waking several times throughout the night
- Frequent headaches in the morning
- Daytime fatigue or drowsiness
- Inability to concentrate
- Insomnia
