Do You Or A Loved One Suffer From Sleep Apnea?
Does your family often complain about your snoring? Do you find that you still feel tired and sluggish after a full night’s sleep? If so, you may be suffering from a very common sleep condition known as sleep apnea.
What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a serious condition in which you stop breathing multiple times throughout the night. It occurs when the muscles in the back of the throat relax during sleep, blocking the airway and restricting your breathing. Each time you stop breathing, due to a lack of oxygen, your brain is alerted to the disruption, causing you to wake up. Unfortunately, this condition remains undiagnosed in many patients because they are unfamiliar with the symptoms and think they are poor sleepers or that their symptoms are related to another condition. Symptoms of sleep apnea include:
- Loud, persistent snoring
- Waking several times throughout the night
- Headache upon waking in the morning
- Unexplained daytime fatigue and drowsiness
- Inability to concentrate on important tasks
- Mood swings
- Waking with a dry mouth
The Importance of Treating Sleep Apnea
Our bodies require quality sleep each night. During sleep, the body and mind reset themselves for the next day. When that doesn’t happen, it can lead to some of the symptoms mentioned above. Lack of sleep can also affect your ability to function properly in your daily life. Untreated sleep apnea can also lead to serious complications with your overall health. It is not uncommon for those who suffer from sleep apnea to experience high blood pressure, hypertension, and a weakened immune system. They are also more likely to have a stroke. We are happy to help treat patients who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea with an oral appliance.
