The Superhero Dental Treatment – Let’s Save Your Tooth!
Dr. Ian Gray’s main goal is to save his patients’ natural teeth. When teeth have experienced severe decay or trauma, one way to save them is with root canal therapy. Many people have unrealistic ideas of what a root canal treatment consists of due to the way the procedure is depicted in television and movies. In reality, root canal therapy is an extremely important treatment that helps eliminate discomfort while saving a patient’s natural tooth. We want to explain more about this treatment so our patients understand how it can impact the future of their oral health.
What is a Root Canal?
When a tooth experiences decay, the ideal time to treat it is when only the enamel, or outer covering of the tooth, is affected. When decay is not treated in a timely manner, it will continue to progress and worsen, making its way through the inside of the tooth, into the root, and causing an infection. This is when we recommend root canal therapy. Without root canal therapy, the tooth will eventually need to be extracted.
Root canal therapy is the process of removing the infected tissue from inside the tooth root. The remaining tissue is then cleaned and disinfected, and a biocompatible material is used to reinforce the structure of the tooth. The process is completed by sealing the hole in the top of the tooth with a dental crown or filling. With all the advancements in dental technology, root canal therapy is a very routine treatment, and most patients experience no discomfort during and after the procedure.
Please don’t postpone treatment for a tooth that is causing you discomfort. If an infected tooth is left untreated, it will not heal on its own and will cause more damage to your jaw and body over time.
