What is a Dental Crown?
If your tooth structure is damaged beyond repair, but your tooth root is healthy and intact, I may recommend a dental crown. A dental crown can also be used to complete more complex dental treatments, like a dental implant or a root canal. A dental crown, also commonly known as a cap, is a custom-made, natural-looking prosthetic tooth that is placed over an entire tooth surface, restoring the original size, shape, and function of the tooth.
Why Get a Dental Crown?
There are many reasons I might recommend a dental crown for you or a loved one. My goal is to help my patients avoid the loss of a tooth, so a dental crown is typically a last resort to avoid needing a tooth extraction. Aside from completing a dental implant and root canal, as mentioned above, a dental crown can be used to:
- Cover a tooth that is misshapen or severely discolored
- Replace a tooth with a large filling
- Add strength to a tooth with little structure remaining
- Fix a cracked tooth
- Protect a tooth from further damage and prevent damage to surrounding teeth
If I recommended a dental crown during your last visit, I encourage you to call my office located in Newmarket, ON to schedule an appointment. Delaying a needed treatment can result in more extensive treatments and additional costs. I want to help prevent you from experiencing further oral health complications.
